Inventory

Goods held for sale. An asset on the balance sheet until sold, when its cost moves to COGS.

Inventory is stock on hand awaiting sale — finished goods and, for manufacturers, raw materials and work in progress. It sits on the balance sheet as a current asset.

When items sell, their cost transfers from inventory to cost of goods sold. Miscounted stock therefore distorts both the balance sheet and profit, which is why regular stocktakes matter.
